In 1936, Bette challenged Warner Brothers studio by going to England to make better quality films since she was being offered unsatisfactory roles at her studio. Jack Warner sued her, and she was forced to honor her contract. Upon her return, however, Bette was offered a new contract and better roles. 

‘I look back on it now, I haven’t any idea how I had the guts to do that whole thing. But when you’re young and wanting to get somewhere, that’s a terrific incentive.’
